On another level, I like fiction that imbues life with a sense of mystery and unbelievability. I feel like we live in a world that increasingly overwhelms us with the sheer volume of unfiltered “facts” and mundane details of people’s lives. The constant status updates, live tweets of every interaction. I see a lot of fiction that mimics this and reproduces a torrent of details, but I’ve been starting to think that fiction should respond by stripping away details and compressing events in a way that, hopefully, imbues the text with mystery and surprise. I may have also just wanted to write a story about weirdos in the woods.
